Our Story

Ruby King Bakery opened its doors in 2002, but its story began long before that. The founder started baking in Guangzhou and first worked in Oakland’s food scene back in 1972. By 1987, he had joined a local bakery as an employee and eventually opened Ruby King to carry forward the traditional Cantonese flavors he grew up with.

Now, after decades of dedication, he’s passing the oven mitts to Ah-Hua, a longtime apprentice who trained under him. Together, they’ve preserved the bakery’s original recipes, adapting them slightly over time to be just a bit healthier - while keeping the soul of each pastry intact.
